You live in Thailand on a year-long visa, and you are about to go home for a week or have decided to fly to a neighbouring country for the weekend. It is simple. You buy a ticket, pack a suitcase and go. But it is exactly at this moment that many people make the most expensive mistake. They leave the country without arranging a re-entry permit and come back without the visa they spent months arranging.
The word “cancelled” sounds dry, but in practice it means losing a year of work, money and nerves. That is why the re-entry permit deserves an article of its own. Let us look at what it is, who needs it, how much it costs, how it is arranged and how to choose between the single and the multiple version.
A re-entry permit is a permission that allows you to leave Thailand and come back without losing your current extension of stay. Put simply, it preserves your visa for the time of a trip abroad.
To understand the logic, let us recall how a year-long student visa works. You are given an initial permission to stay, and then it is extended at immigration. This extension is what keeps you in the country for the whole year. It is tied to the fact that you are in Thailand. If you cross the border without notifying immigration, the system considers that you have left the country for good, and the extension is cancelled.
A re-entry permit notifies the system. It says that you are leaving for a short time and will certainly return. That is why, when you come back, you are given a stamp and your previous period of validity is preserved.
It is important to remember that the permit does not extend your visa and does not add days. It only preserves what you already have. If your extension ends in two months, then with the permit or without it, it will end in two months.
It is needed by those who are in the country on an extension of stay and intend to leave. A typical example is a student visa after the first extension at immigration. If you want to visit your homeland, go on holiday, meet family or travel abroad on business, the permit is arranged in advance.
It is not needed by those who do not plan to leave the country during the year. Many students live in Phuket almost the whole time without trips and do not arrange it at all. This is a perfectly normal and economical strategy.
A separate situation concerns those who hold a multiple-entry visa issued in advance at an embassy. For such people the rules of entry are different, and the need for a permit depends on the specific situation. If you are not sure, it is better to check with the school or with immigration before the trip, not after.
It is also worth remembering people who have just arrived for the initial period and have not yet received an extension. The rules may differ for them too. So the universal advice is this. Before any trip abroad, check whether you need a permit in your particular status.
There are two types. The single permit is valid for one exit and one return. Once you have come back, it is considered used. If you later want to leave again, you will have to arrange a new one.
The multiple permit is valid for an unlimited number of exits and returns during your period of stay. You can leave as many times as you need and each time return with your visa preserved.
Both permits are tied to the term of your current extension. If the extension ends in six months, the permit will not extend it further. After the next extension at immigration you can arrange a new permit for the following period.
The choice between the two types depends only on your plans. If you leave once a year, a single permit is enough. If you leave often, the multiple one is better value and more convenient. The next section shows how to calculate this.
The official fees at the time of writing are as follows. A single permit costs 1,000 baht. A multiple permit costs 3,800 baht. Rates can change, so it is better to check the current figures before arranging it.
Now some simple arithmetic. If you add up the cost of single permits for three trips, you get 3,000 baht. For four trips it is already 4,000 baht, which is more than the price of the multiple one. So if you plan to leave four times during the period or more often, it is better value to get the multiple permit. If there are two or three trips, single permits will cost less.
Take into account not only money. The multiple permit gives freedom. You do not have to go to immigration every time before a trip, and you can leave suddenly if something urgent happens. For people with family abroad or with work that requires travel, this is a serious advantage.
On the other hand, if you doubt that you will leave at all, do not hurry to arrange the multiple permit. It is better to arrange a single one at the moment when the plan becomes real. An extra 2,800 baht thrown to the wind is of no use to anyone.
The permit is arranged at immigration. You need to come with your passport, a completed form and a photograph. The staff check the documents, collect the fee and put a mark in your passport. The procedure usually takes from a few minutes to an hour, depending on the queue.
In some cases a single permit can also be obtained at the airport before departure. Special counters are provided for this. But this method does not always work, and you should not count on it without confirmation. Queues, technical failures and unexpected requirements are possible. It is safer to arrange the permit in advance, during the normal working hours of immigration, and arrive at the airport with the mark already in place.
If you arrange the permit through a school, help with the permit is usually included in the support. The school knows the requirements of the office, prepares the documents and can suggest a convenient time for the visit. For many students this saves half a day and reduces the chance of a mistake.
Before the visit, check that the term of your current extension is sufficient. There is no point in arranging a permit when only a couple of days remain until the end of the term. It is better to do it right after the extension if trips are planned in advance.
The most unpleasant part. If you crossed the border without a permit, your extension of stay is cancelled. You return to the country without a year-long visa. You are given a new stamp on general grounds, usually for a short period, and you have to start all over again.
This means a new submission of documents, new fees and new waiting. For a student it also means lost time, because the school course has to be matched with the new procedure. Some people lose several weeks and substantial sums on this.
The situation cannot be corrected retroactively. The permit must be arranged before departure. So the phrase “I’ll arrange it later” does not work here. If you have already bought a ticket and are about to fly, the first thing to do is check whether you have the mark in your passport.
A good habit is to link arranging the permit to buying the ticket. You bought a ticket, immediately planned a visit to immigration. That way you will not forget and will not find yourself at the airport with an unpleasant surprise.
The first mistake is confusion about dates. People arrange the permit when only a few days remain until the end of the extension. Or they go on a trip that may run beyond the end of the extension. Make sure the return date fits within the term.
The second mistake is expecting the permit to extend the visa. It extends nothing. If you left for three weeks at the end of the extension term, you can only return before the date it ends.
The third mistake is buying a multiple permit without calculating. A person arranges the expensive option and then leaves once. Estimate the number of trips in advance.
The fourth mistake is a forgotten notification after returning. After each trip the landlord has to file a notification about your residence. For details see the article on the TM.30 notification. Many forget about this, and then questions arise at the next visit to immigration.
The fifth mistake is a wrong calculation of the return. If you plan to return through a neighbouring country by a land border, find out how the crossing works and which marks you will need.
The theory is clear, but life is more complicated. Let us look at the situations in which people most often make decisions in a rush.
The first situation. An urgent departure. You get a call saying you need to come home right away. A ticket can be bought in an hour, but a re-entry permit will not appear by itself. Here the habit of holding a multiple permit helps if your family is far away. If you do not have one, the first thing to do is go to immigration and arrange a single permit. It is better to lose half a day than to lose a year-long visa. If you are flying at night or on a day off, find out in advance whether the counters at the airport are working, and do not rely on them blindly.
The second situation. A planned holiday trip. Here everything is simpler, because there is time. You bought the tickets, noted the date, and arranged the permit a week before departure. At the same time check that the term of your extension does not end during the trip or just after it. If the end of the extension is close, it makes sense to extend first and then leave. Then you will not have to submit documents on the day of your return.
The third situation. A return by a route other than the one you expected. Suppose you planned to return by plane, but the flight was cancelled, and now you are returning overland across a border. The permit is valid regardless of the way you cross the border. But at land checkpoints the queues and the order of procedures may differ. Allow more time and keep all your documents at hand.
In all three cases the general principle is the same. The permit is arranged before departure, not after. If you get used to checking the mark in your passport before every trip, the same way you check that you have a ticket, the risk of a mistake drops to zero.
Students should remember one more circumstance. When you leave the country, you miss lessons. A student visa is based on real study, and attendance matters. The school answers for you to immigration and takes your presence on the course into account.
That is why it is better to warn the school about trips in advance. Short absences usually do not cause problems if you reported them and are ready to catch up on the material. Long absences are more difficult, and they should be planned together with the course schedule. A good school meets you halfway if it sees that you take your studies seriously.
An open conversation with the school is useful also because it will suggest the best time for a trip. For example, after the end of a block of lessons or during the holidays. Then you keep your visa and do not fall behind in your studies. To make the process go smoothly, prepare a small set. A passport with a valid visa and the latest stamp. A completed application form, which you can get on the spot or download in advance. A photograph of standard size. Copies of the passport pages with your details, the visa and the latest entry stamp. Cash for the fee in the right amount, preferably with a small reserve.
Arrive at the beginning of the working day and do not plan urgent matters for that day. Queues at immigration in Phuket can be unpredictable, especially in high season. It is worth dressing neatly. This is not a formal requirement for every visitor, but staff always treat people who look respectful better.
Treat the visit calmly and politely. The staff deal with a huge flow of people, and goodwill often decides more than any argument. If something is unclear, ask again. It is better to clarify on the spot than to fix things later.
After the process, check the mark in your passport. Make sure the type of permit is the one you asked for, that the dates are correct and that the stamp is legible. If you notice a mistake, correct it right away, without leaving the counter. Later it will be harder to do.
Sometimes rare but unpleasant situations arise. You lost your passport or received a new one because the old one expired. Along with the passport, the marks of the visa and the permit are gone. This is not a catastrophe, but it requires careful action.
If your passport is lost, report it to the police and to your country’s embassy. Then you will need to restore your documents and inform immigration. The procedure depends on the circumstances, and there are few general recipes here. The school can suggest the order of actions and help prepare the papers.
If the passport was simply replaced with a new one, you usually need to transfer the visa marks. For this you need to come to immigration with both passports. Do not leave the country until the marks have been transferred, because the system may not recognise you as a person with a valid extension.
In any non-standard situation, the main rule stays the same. Before crossing the border, make sure you have a valid re-entry permit if you need one. It is better to spend a day finding out than a year fixing the consequences.
The re-entry permit fits into the general routine of life on a student visa. Next to it stand the residence report, the extension and the notifications. If you build your schedule in advance, everything falls into a simple system.
A useful trick is to keep a calendar of visa dates. Mark in it the end of the extension, the date of the next report and the planned trips. When you see everything on one page, it becomes much harder to miss something.

"Отличная школа. По ценам сразу всё говорят, так что будет вся картина где, сколько и за что надо платить. Если будут возникать вопросы как сделать банковскую карту, как сделать реэентри, бордер и тд, в этом тоже подскажут и помогут. Везде стоят кондеи, есть место где можно чай/кофе/водичку попить, печеньки и тд. Есть несколько языков, если вы хотите серьёзно учиться) знаю ребят, кто ходит на тайский и они уже прям могут пообщаться, не просто 20-30 фраз и слов, которые за год тут, как мне кажется, само собой выучиваются. А если английский будете учить, то попадайте в группу к Андрею - это лучший учитель английского за мою жизнь, да и просто пообщаться с ним всегда интересно и приятно. Немаловажным для меня, было наличие в классах кондиционера и то, что все учебные материалы - бесплатно предоставляются школой. В группе есть симпатичные девушки, if you know what i mean ;) Кстати, если вас интересует бордерран, такая услуга тоже есть, а работать с русскоговорящим руководителем Никитой - одно удовольствие! Однозначно рекомендую!

Получил в школе консультацию на русском языке. После оплаты годового обучения школа сделала мне учебную визу, учу английский у носителя языка. Есть классы для любого уровня владения английским, также можно учить тайский по желанию. Оперативная обратная связь и высокое качество обучения, удобное место - всем рекомендую эту школу!
