For many foreigners, a visit to immigration in Phuket turns into a small adventure. It is unclear where to go, which documents to bring, which queue to stand in and what to say to the officer. Some get through everything in an hour, others lose half a day and leave with nothing, because they forgot a single paper. The difference is almost never luck. It is preparation.
This article is about how the visit goes, what to bring, how to behave on the spot and which small things save time. It does not replace a consultation for your specific case, but it gives a general picture that removes half of the anxiety. We draw on the practice of people who go through this procedure regularly, but the rules and the order at the office can change, so on the day of your visit it is always worth checking current details.
Immigration is responsible for your legal status in the country. It is where you extend your stay, change your status, arrange re-entry permits and submit residence reports if you do not use other methods. A student on a year-long visa will have to go to immigration several times a year. That is why being able to do it calmly is very useful.
Some procedures can be done online or through a representative. But many require your personal presence, especially an extension of stay. The officer has to see you, check the documents and put a mark in the passport. No online service fully replaces this yet.
It is important to understand the balance of forces here. Immigration is not your opponent. It is a government institution with clear rules, working with a huge flow of people. The better you understand the rules and the more carefully you are prepared, the easier everything goes. The staff, as a rule, quickly recognise people who have come prepared, and working with them is easier.
The main immigration office in Phuket is located in the Phuket Town area. The exact address and working hours are worth checking before the visit on official resources or with the school, since they can change. You usually get there by taxi, by your own transport or through ride-hailing apps. Allow time for the journey, because traffic jams on the island can be significant.
The office receives visitors on working days, and is closed on holidays and weekends. This is important to bear in mind when you plan a visit at the end of your term. One long holiday period can eat up several days, and then instead of a calm reserve of time you will be left with a rush.
The best time for a visit is the beginning of the working day and the middle of the week. On Monday and Friday there are usually more visitors. In high season the queues grow, and the waiting time can increase several times over. If you can choose, come at a quieter time and never leave the visit for the last day of your term.
Before leaving home, check that you have everything you need. Going back for a forgotten paper to the other end of the island is very unpleasant, especially if you have already waited in the queue.
The specific list depends on the procedure, but there is a basic set that is useful almost always. A passport with a valid visa and all the stamps. Copies of the passport pages with your details, the visa and the latest entry stamp. Photographs of standard size, usually several. Completed application forms. Confirmation of the place of residence, for example a copy of the lease and the landlord’s notification. Cash to pay the fee.
For a student visa extension, the school’s documents are added. These are the school’s letter, confirmation of your studies, attendance information and copies of the school’s own documents. These papers are prepared by the school, and you only need to make sure you have them in hand before the visit. Do not try to prepare school documents yourself. They have to be certified in a specific way.
Extra copies will come in handy too. Take two or three copies of each document. There are copy shops near the office, but there is a queue and the prices are higher. It is better to do everything at home in advance.
Think separately about a pen. It seems funny, but papers often have to be filled in on the spot, and people remember the pen at the last moment. Put two in your bag. Also take water and a phone charger, because the wait can drag on.

When you arrive at the office, the first thing to do is get a queue number. For this you go to a counter or terminal where you indicate the type of service you need. If you are not sure which button to press, ask the staff member at the entrance. They will advise and help.
Then comes the wait. Numbers are called on a screen. While you wait, check your documents once more, fill in any missing forms and get your money ready. Do not go from window to window hoping to speed things up. It does not work and can irritate the staff.
When you are called, go to the window and hand in the documents in the order in which they lie in the folder. The officer checks the set, asks questions and verifies the data. Answer briefly, to the point and calmly. If a question is unclear, ask them to repeat it.
After the documents are checked, you are told the amount of the fee. Payment is made on the spot. Then the officer puts the marks, enters the data into the system and returns the passport. Sometimes the passport is kept for a few days, and in that case you are given a date for its return. Make sure the date is written down and photograph the receipt.
When leaving, check the passport. Make sure the mark is placed correctly, the dates match what you expected and the stamp is legible. If you see a mistake, report it immediately, without leaving the window.
Behaviour affects the result more than many people think. Thai culture values politeness and calm. A loud voice, irritation and arguments almost never help. A smile and a calm tone help far more than any arguments.
Dress neatly. There may be no formal dress requirements for every visitor, but shorts, tank tops and beach footwear create an impression of disrespect. It is better to wear closed or at least neat shoes and clothing that covers the shoulders and knees. This does not make you a formal person, it simply shows respect for the place.
Do not argue with the staff. If a requirement seems wrong to you, politely ask on what basis it is being put forward and ask for an explanation. If that does not help, ask what can be done to meet the requirement. A constructive approach is always better than confrontation.
Do not try to offer money for speeding things up. This is not only inappropriate but also dangerous. Any form of informal payment is against the law and can lead to serious problems.
And finally, be patient. The queue moves at its own pace, and you cannot speed it up. It is better to treat the visit as part of a process that you simply have to get through.
People often come back to the office a second time. The main reasons occur again and again, and they are easy to avoid.
A missing document. The most common reason. You forgot a copy, did not bring a photograph, did not get the letter from the school. Make a checklist and go through it the evening before.
A mistake in a form. A typo in a name, a wrong passport number, a skipped field. Fill in the forms carefully and reread them before handing them in.
No notification of residence. We covered this in detail in the article on the TM.30 notification. Check that you have it in advance.
The wrong time for the visit. A person arrives an hour before closing and there is simply no time to see them. Or on the day before a holiday, when the queue is huge. Plan with a reserve.
A wrong understanding of the procedure. You came for one thing, but another is needed. For example, you came to extend your stay without arranging a re-entry permit before a trip. More on this in the material about the re-entry permit.
It happens that an officer does not accept the documents or asks for something to be clarified. Do not treat this as a catastrophe. Most often it is a small shortcoming that can be put right.
Ask exactly what is wrong. Ask them to specify which documents are needed and write down the answer. If your English is not sufficient, use a translator on your phone or ask the school staff for help. It is important to understand the reason, not just hear the refusal.
Then gather what is missing and come back. If the validity of your stamp has not yet run out, you have time. If the term is coming to an end, act faster and ask for help if necessary. Do not try to “push through” a decision or appeal to other officers. This usually does not help. It is better to calmly fix the cause and come again.
Good preparation begins a few days before the visit. Check the term of your stamp and determine what you need. Contact the school and ask whether the documents on its side are ready. Make copies, print photographs and fill in the forms.
The evening before, arrange everything in a folder in the order in which the documents will be requested. Put the money separately so that you do not have to search your bag. Check that you have taken your passport and that it has enough blank pages.
In the morning set out early. Allow for traffic, parking and the time needed to get a number. It is better to arrive early and wait than to be late and lose your place in the queue.
If you use the services of the school, much of this is done for you. The school prepares the package, suggests a convenient time and explains what to do on the spot. This is especially useful for newcomers going to immigration for the first time.
So that you have a better idea of why you need to go to the office at all, let us list the main cases. Each has its own features, and knowing them in advance removes many questions.
The first is the extension of stay on the basis of study. This is the main reason for visits by students. You bring the package of documents, the school prepares its part in advance, and you hand everything in at the window. The officer checks the set and puts a stamp with a new date. Sometimes this happens the same day, sometimes the passport is kept for a few days.
The second is arranging a re-entry permit. It is a short procedure, but it must be done before you leave the country. Many put it off until the last moment and then get nervous, so it is better to plan the visit in advance. We covered the details in a separate article.
The third is a change of status. If you came on another visa and are moving to a student one, a separate visit with a special set of documents will be needed. The school’s involvement is especially important here, because mistakes are expensive.
The fourth is the residence report every ninety days. It can be submitted in person, and in some cases by other means. If you choose a personal visit, take the queues into account, especially closer to the end of the period, when many people come at the same time.
The fifth is the resolution of special matters. Replacing a passport, correcting mistakes in records, clarifying status. Such visits happen less often but require patience and preparation.
Many people worry that they will not be able to explain themselves. Immigration staff in most cases speak basic English, and often Thai too. For routine procedures this is enough, because the questions are standard and repeat.
To feel confident, learn a few phrases. How to say that you came to extend your visa. How to ask someone to repeat. How to say thank you. If the conversation gets complicated, use a translator on your phone. Prepare answers to typical questions in advance, for example where you live, where you study and how long you have been in the country. Show a written answer if you are not sure about the pronunciation.
Do not hesitate to ask for help. If you came with the school or with a representative, they will help with communication. For nervous newcomers this is a serious relief, because the fear of saying something wrong disappears.
The load on the office changes through the year. In high season, when many people come to the island, the queues are noticeably longer. Before holidays and at the end of the month the situation is often more tense. In the low season you can count on a calmer atmosphere.
Plan visits with this in mind. If you know that your stamp expires in the middle of the season, start preparing in advance. A reserve of a week or two makes the visit calm whatever the circumstances.
It is worth remembering the weather too. In the rainy season trips can take longer because of floods and traffic. Allow extra minutes and take an umbrella, and keep documents in a waterproof folder. Soaked papers create extra problems.
Finally, keep in mind that any changes to the office schedule, for example closures on special occasions, are announced in advance. Check this the day before so as not to arrive for nothing.
You received the stamp, but the process does not end there. Immediately after the visit, photograph the page with the new mark and save the photo in several places. Write in your calendar the date the new term ends and the nearest events, such as the next report.
If you were given receipts, keep them until the end of the validity of the visas. They may come in handy if questions arise. Put the originals in the folder with documents and keep them together with your passport.
Tell the school about the result. If you went on your own, the school should know that the extension has been arranged, so that it can update its records. This is also part of the student’s responsibility.
And finally, plan the next step. If you received an extension, it is the right time to think about upcoming trips and the re-entry permit. The sooner you set out the dates, the calmer the year will be.

"Отличная школа. По ценам сразу всё говорят, так что будет вся картина где, сколько и за что надо платить. Если будут возникать вопросы как сделать банковскую карту, как сделать реэентри, бордер и тд, в этом тоже подскажут и помогут. Везде стоят кондеи, есть место где можно чай/кофе/водичку попить, печеньки и тд. Есть несколько языков, если вы хотите серьёзно учиться) знаю ребят, кто ходит на тайский и они уже прям могут пообщаться, не просто 20-30 фраз и слов, которые за год тут, как мне кажется, само собой выучиваются. А если английский будете учить, то попадайте в группу к Андрею - это лучший учитель английского за мою жизнь, да и просто пообщаться с ним всегда интересно и приятно.
